Q&A with John

We asked John his vision for his future in life and career.

Q. How long have you been with ASL, and what is your position?

I’ve been here since July and am the new Lending Manager. I help source new lending scenarios that will be a great fit for both ASL and our clients.

Q. What do you like most about your job at ASL?

There’s a wonderful team environment; everyone is positive. It’s a company that has stood the test of time and clearly knows who they are and what they want to achieve. There’s integrity in how Australian Securities carries itself; that ethos flows through from the team right out to the client experience. It makes my job so much easier.

Q. Name one of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career

I’ve learnt that the universe will deliver if you dot your ‘i’s and cross your ‘t’s. If you do all the right things as best you can, the results will follow. I believe that communication is critical to everything in life. Always under promise and over deliver.

Q. Which Australian Securities value do you resonate with the most and why?

Ethics in a holistic sense is one, along with integrity and transparency – they align well with me because I already expect them from myself. Even though I’ve only been here for a short time, it already feels like home. That’s not something that many people get to experience at a workplace.

Q. How do you like to spend your time when you aren’t working?

I aim to find a balance between spending time with my family, engaging in community activity, staying active, and traveling. I’m a soccer coach for my son’s soccer team but alas a little unfit. While I don’t always get the work/life balance right, I strive towards it.

Q. If I weren’t at Australian Securities, I’d be…

That’s a tough question to answer, as what I’m doing now is my dream job. I’ve had a few pivots in my working life, and I have a lot of interests.

Q. Do you have a favourite person, book, blog or podcast that has influenced your life and career?

I am very fortunate to have had many mentors throughout my life, and I also take inspiration from many different sources. If I could only choose one person, I would choose my wife. She keeps me level-headed and humble, and, most importantly, driven. She expects the best out of me, and as a result, so do I.

Q. If there were one piece of advice you would have to share with existing and prospective clients, what would it be?

The best outcomes come from a win, win, win scenario (you’ll find there are always three parties involved in any dealing). If all three parties are winning, then we will always succeed. This can be applied to anything and anywhere.
